Grind it below grade. Get your yard back.

A stump is a mower-killer, a tripping hazard, and a soft spot for carpenter ants. We grind them down well below the soil line across Trumbull and Mahoning counties — old removals, storm losses, the one the last guy left behind — and rake the grindings out so you can sod, seed, or plant right over the spot.

The last step of a removal

Stump Grinding · Below grade

Once a tree's down, the stump is what's left to fight with. It dulls the mower blade every pass, it's an easy thing to roll an ankle on, and as it rots it turns into a condo for carpenter ants and yellowjackets right next to the house. Grinding it out is how you actually finish the job.

We get a lot of calls about stumps the previous crew skipped — they took the tree, took the check, and left the stump for someone else. We don't work that way; on our own removals the grind is just the last step, and we're happy to come clean up after somebody else's. One stump or a whole yard full of them, we bring the grinder and chew them all out in one trip.

Grinding beats digging the whole root ball out. It's faster, it doesn't tear up half your lawn, and you're left with a hole and a pile of grindings instead of a crater. Backfill with topsoil, rake it level, and seed — by next season you won't know a tree stood there.

A lot of ash stumps around here.

Emerald ash borer took out so many ash trees across Trumbull and Mahoning that half the stumps we grind are the leftovers from those removals. If you had a dead ash dropped a year or two back and never dealt with the stump, that's exactly the kind of cleanup we knock out in an afternoon — and we'll grind the others while we're set up, since the grinder's already on the truck.

Questions, answered

Stump grinding · FAQ

How much does stump grinding cost?

Price tracks the size of the stump and how many you've got. Diameter at the base is the main driver — a small ornamental stump is quick; a wide old maple takes longer and more grinding. Tight access, rocks, or roots flaring across a walkway add time. We give you a firm number at the free estimate, and we'll often knock the per-stump price down when there are several to do in one trip.

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding chews the stump down into chips below the soil line and leaves the root system in the ground to rot naturally — it's faster, cheaper, and far less disruptive to your lawn. Full removal means excavating the whole root ball, which tears up a wide area and is rarely necessary. For nearly every yard, grinding is the right call.

How far below grade do you grind?

Standard is several inches below the surrounding grade — deep enough that you can rake in topsoil and lay sod or seed right over it with no hump left behind. If you're planning to plant a new tree in the same spot or pour something, tell us and we'll grind deeper and clear more of the root flare.

Can I plant grass or a new tree where the stump was?

Grass, yes — backfill the hollow with topsoil, tamp it, and seed or sod over it. We'll leave the grindings raked into the hole or hauled off, your call. A brand-new tree in the exact same spot is trickier because of the leftover roots and the nitrogen the decaying wood pulls from the soil; shift it a few feet over, or amend the soil and wait a season. We'll point you the right way at the job.
